The governor and the head of Massachusetts State Police are reacting to lead Karen Read investigator Trooper Michael Proctor being relieved of duty.State Police Interim Col. John Mawn announced Monday night that Proctor had been relieved of duty and transferred out of the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office.Mawn said state police were closely monitoring the Read trial. In one of the most dramatic moments of the trial, Proctor took the witness stand and read the vulgar texts he wrote about Read during the investigation into the death of John O’Keefe in January 2022 in Canton.On Tuesday, when asked if Proctor should be fired or if Proctor’s supervisors should be disciplined, Mawn said he’ll wait for the State Police Internal Affairs investigation and disciplinary process to play out. But he’s not waiting to condemn Proctor’s words and inappropriate actions.“Misconduct in any way, shape or form in the Massachusetts State Police will not be tolerated. I think I’ve said that I condemn those comments in the strongest terms possible. They are not reflective of the Massachusetts State Police. That’s not where we want to be in as an organization,” Mawn said. Gov. Maura Healey supports Mawn’s decision. “The colonel made the right decision. So I fully support the decision made by MSP on this. As you know, it’s under an internal investigation, so that process will have to go forward,” Healey said. On cross-examination during the trial, Proctor also admitted to drinking with a brother of a witness.Proctor is currently awaiting a duty status hearing to determine his future with the state police.
