The premiere race of the NASCAR Chicago Street Race weekend is now underway.
Some rain drizzles moved through the Chicago area and reached downtown just before the race start time. However, the weather is a far cry from the heavy downpours that caused the race to be delayed and shortened last year.
The forecast looks to be dry for most of the duration of the 75-lap race as the showers were expected to quickly move out of the area after the race begins after 3:30 p.m.
As the drivers started their engines, Shane van Gisbergen and Kyle Larson appeared to be the favorites to win the race.
Van Gisbergen won the Cup Series in Chicago last year and he also won the 2024 Xfinity Series race on the downtown street course on Saturday, making his third straight road course win of the NASCAR season.
Larson won the pole for Sunday’s race in the qualifying rounds Saturday morning, meaning he will have the most favorable car position to start the race.
Bubba Wallace is another notable name in NASCAR who races for 23XI Racing, which is co-owned by Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan. Wallace is competing in Sunday’s race, but he said on Friday that he knows street race courses are not his strong suit. Wallace held a block party event in Chicago as part of the weekend of events.
