Billy Horschel says TGL will provide a never-before-seen perspective on the game of golf for fans old and new.
TGL starts on January 8 2025 – exclusively live on Sky Sports – from the custom-built SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and fuses golf technology and innovation on an unprecedented scale.
Horschel, who is on the 24-player roster, praised TGL’s creators, TMRW Sports, for their innovation which he believes will cater to staunch golf fans as well as those coming to the game for the first time.
“For the hardcore golf fan, they are going to enjoy all the numbers and data,” he told Sky Sports. “The launch conditions, how much a ball has spun, how far did it go – they are going to get a kick out of that.
“For me, if I hit a shot and the ball should apex around 112 feet, but it only does 100 and comes up five yards short, I will know it only went 100 feet in the air and the spin rate was too high was why it came up short.
“When we throw out numbers like that and discuss them with our team-mates, that is going to be really cool.
“It’s going to work for everyone. The non-golf fan is going to see something different, and the hardcore fans are going to get all the data and see the players in a different light.
“It’s a great thing and it’s great that Sky Sports are going to air it in the UK, which has the most knowledgeable golf fans in the world. They are the most knowledgeable, most hardcore, most gritty, and love the game of golf.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to experience that going over there in the last seven years and I hope they get as much enjoyment out of TGL as I’m going to playing and being a part of it.”
The competition features six teams of golf stars in a season-long competition finishing on March 25, where teams will face off in two-hour matches across 15 custom-designed holes in a hybrid of virtual and real-life action, giving fans the opportunity to watch the best players in the world in a new and engaging way.
For Horschel, the cutting-edge platform has laid the foundation for players to go out and entertain golf fans, expanding the reach of the game he loves so dear in the process.
“What everyone at TGL have created is an unbelievable product,” he added. “They have given everything to be successful, and now it falls on us as players to be the entertainers.
“We’re still going to be competitive; we’re still going to want to win and get the bragging rights, but we need to be entertainers and different to what people see 47 weeks out of the year on the PGA Tour.
“We can show the side that people may not see out on the golf course and show them a little bit more of who we are behind closed doors.
“Those little things go a long way to the golf fan and non-golf fan connecting with this TGL and allowing us to be successful.”
He continued: “I’ve been excited about this since they came and spoke to me about this in early 2022. After a very brief conversation I didn’t need to think much more, I said yes right away.
“When I look at the game of golf, I love the game. I think it’s the greatest game in the world and it can do so many things for people, it can open doors, create relationships, allow you to travel the world.
“Going to a golf course and trying to learn how to play the game is scary for beginners, so trying to put two scary things together doesn’t always match and it can hinder people from wanting to take it up.
“I’m excited because this can open another avenue to getting more people involved in the game of golf.”
