Santa Cruz County runner headed to Olympics after record-breaking finish
Middle-distance runner Nikki Hiltz has earned their spot in Paris after finishing first during their qualifying race at the women’s 1,500-meter race at the U.S. Olympic Trials on Sunday.Hiltz finished with a time of 3:55:33, a U.S. Olympic Trials record, and the second-fastest time set by an American in the women’s 1,500-meter race. Hiltz, 29, who uses they/them pronouns, said the race had significance beyond their accomplishment. “This is bigger than just me. It’s the last day of Pride Month … I wanted to run this one for my community,” they said. “All the LGBT folks, yeah, you guys brought me home that last hundred .
